Okay, so this is my first blog post, so I guess I will introduce myself and tell you why I decided music would be a good topic for my blog.
Welp…. People call me lots of names, but my birth name is Kaya and I am mildly (extremely) obsessed with music.
It all started when I was maybe three, and I used to jam out for literally hours to Garth Brooks. Then, when I was nine(ish), I was in love with my little sister’s Melissa and Doug piano with 25 keys (including the black ones). I felt very accomplished after I learned how to play Let It Go and decided I was enough of a pro to progress to a piano with 88 keys. On my tenth birthday, my parents got me a piano. Once I started to learn how to play the melody with my right hand and some little chords with my left, I started to sing along with the music my hands were making. Now I love to sing. A lot. Ask my siblings or parents. I can assure you they will tell you that I’m always basically screaming my head off in my definitely not soundproof bedroom.
I used to be super shy about playing any songs on piano for people and wouldn’t have ever dreamt of singing in front of people, but now that’s kind of all I want to do. The reason I love to sing for people now is because (1.) My mom used to sneak videos of me singing and playing piano and then show them to people. Then, I’d get SUPER embarrassed and the person who she showed it to would be like “Oh my Gosh! Your voice is soo pretty!”, and I’d be like “Okay, sure.”. But then (2.) My Great Uncle Brad (super talented musician) asked me to sing for him while playing piano and surprisingly, I did. Then, he told me my voice was “soo pretty” and I’d say “Thanks” because I actually was starting to believe it. Then one amazing day (3.) my mom brought me to the brewery she managed to watch a musician that was performing that night ( Cheryl Rodey. Listen to her single,Torture, on Spotify). I had heard so much about her and watched a bunch of her videos on YouTube and on her break, she came over and started talking. To me. I may or may not have fangirled. I told her that I was getting pretty passionate about singing and playing, and she told me I should do choir. That’s when I really got a lot more confident in my musical ability.
For me, it was easier to sing and play for a another musician. I think it was because I felt like he would understand and not judge if I made a mistake, having known that stuff like that happens to all of us.
My hope is that this inspires you to start doing what you’ve been wanting to do, but were maybe too afraid to do. Trust me, it really pays off.
See ya later, my dudes,
Kaya
